An alphabetical work in progress – ‘about me’ in A to Z.
A – America – We like to go to America every couple of years – we’ve been to Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. We like it so much that we got married in San Francisco, California.
B – Buddhism – I have a fascination with Buddhism. It’s responsible for me giving up alcohol for 12 months, and meat for over seven years. I’m a fair-weather Buddhist and I have a lot to learn, but 2014 will be the year that I crack it properly.
C – Cameras – I like cameras. I do. I have many of them, mostly film. My favourites are my Holga 120CFN, Olympus Trip, and Ricoh XR-P. I also love my Polaroid ONE. I’m a huge fan of the Impossible project & I’ll be eternally grateful to their dedication to keeping instant photography alive.
D – Delis – We like delis. My favourite dinner would involve a trip to a deli, or at least the deli section in Waitrose. Hummus sun-dried tomatoes, olives, pitta bread, beetroot dip, Baba ghanoush, cured meats, and Manchego – oh my! Swoon.
E – Eighties hits – I listen to hits from the Eighties more than most other music. Such a great decade for music. Bad day? Love is a battlefield, Pat Benatar. Friday morning, getting ready for work? 9 to 5, Dolly Parton. Need to do the hoovering? Graceland, Paul Simon. ANY task, chore, or bad feeling is made better by a power ballad. FACT.
F – Fragrance – Perfume. Things that smell nice make me happy. It’s as simple as that. Roses in the garden, perfume from my perfume cupboard [yes, I have a cupboard of perfume], scented candles, the smell of fresh laundry, the smell of a bubble bath, fresh air smell, bonfires, cooking, freshly cut grass…
G – Glitter – It’s one of my three favourite colours, along with green & yellow. There is nothing that cannot be improved upon with the addition of glitter. Glitter is sparkly loveliness.
H – Haberdashery – Do I sew? Well, technically no, but that doesn’t stop me liking buttons, and ‘B’ was already taken. And fabric [Liberty especially]. And ribbons. I ADORE ribbons. It’s lovely to wrap a present and finish it off with a real ribbon, something that the gift receiver can keep [other than their gift, obviously]. I one day would like to have a button box, just like my Nan did. I’ll feel like I’ve made it once I have a button box. Maybe one day my grandchildren will use it to play a game of tiddlywinks.
I – Interior furnishings – Cushions, candles, lamps, blankets, throws, candles, coffee tables, vases, candles, rugs, candles, sofas, cushions… yes, I really like candles and cushions. I really like home shops [vintage, or otherwise] and I enjoy a stroll around IKEA occasionally.
J – Jewellery – I’m always on the lookout for new jewellery designers. I’m very particular in what I like and what I wear and I get a lot of compliments on my jewellery. My favourite designers are Alex Monroe, Alexis Dove, Pamela Love, Erica Weiner, and Mociun. I also like vintage jewellery and my latest vintage find was a 1930s milk glass multi-strand beaded necklace, which is beautiful. Vintage doesn’t have to cost the Earth and you can always find something pretty if you know where to look.
K – Komedy – OK, I’ve cheated here, but I really like watching comedy. The husband and I particularly enjoying sitting down to an episode of I’m Alan Partridge. We also like The IT crowd, 8 out of 10 cats [also, 8 out of 10 cats does Countdown], Dave Gorman, Mock the week, QI, Noel Fielding’s luxury comedy, and many more.
L – Little Dragon – My favourite band. Fact. I’ve seen them live twice, and both times they blew me away. Go and check out the song “Twice” or “Little man” or “Blinking pigs” if you want an idea of what they’re about.
M – Memes – Internet memes make the World go round. OK, maybe they don’t, but they get me through my commute to work [I HEART BUZZFEED]. Here are some of my favourites – Grumpy cat, Epic fails, Rickrolling [this is my absolute favourite], Kanye West interruption, Cute Overload, Condescending Willy Wonka, and many more…
N – Netflix – Netflix is brilliant. We’ve spent so many hours together, watching Breaking Bad, Bates Motel, Dexter, The Good Wife, Lie to Me, The Riches… and so many more. It has paid for itself hundreds of times over, I’m sure!
O – Outdoors – What’s not to love about the great outdoors? It’s not called the GREAT outdoors for no reason. We enjoy picnics, walks, photography, wandering, exploring, travelling, outdoor markets, parks, gardens, grounds, trees, plants… the list is long. I like to fill my lungs with fresh air whilst taking iPhone photographs of daisies, butterflies, and willow trees.
P – Pussy cats – ‘C’ was taken by cameras, so I had to improvise. Cats. You show me a person who doesn’t like cats and I’ll show you a person without a heart. OK, that’s not true, but I do think cats are wonderful. I demonstrate this by sharing a house with one and she is ah-ma-zing. Our little fuzzy friend. I feel privileged that we open the door to let her go out every day, and every day she chooses to come back to us. That’s something quite special.
Q – Queenie – I’m a fan. What more do I have to say? Long live The Queen.
R – Recipes – I like having them, I don’t particularly like sticking to them but I like having them as a guide. This could explain why I’m no good at baking, baking is too precise. Cooking, however, I think I am good at. Even if I’m not Jamie Oliver, I am able to feed the husband every night, and that’s something. I have a postcard box that I bought in Brighton that I use as a recipe box, and I really like it.
S – Stationery – I love stationery. Proper ink pens, novelty writing paper, shaped erasers, diaries, highlighters, post-it notes, coloured pencils, wash tape, envelopes… the list goes on. If there’s a Japanese stationery shop nearby, that’s where you’ll find me. Please don’t call it stationary. That’s not cool, that’s standing still.
T – Tea – Earl grey, Indian wedding tea, English breakfast, Every day, chamomile… these are all types of tea. My favourite types of tea. If you need a hug and there’s no-one around, just make a cup of tea and your worries will disperse.
U – Unicorns – The day I stop believing in unicorns is the day the world stops spinning. I hope this day never comes.
V – Vintage – I love spending a Saturday afternoon rummaging around a vintage shop, whether it be for a handbag, a necklace, a gravy boat, or a tea cup, I find it therapeutic and exciting.
W – Wife – That’s me! I’m brand new to being a wife and I’m enjoying it a lot. It feels like an honour to be called “wife” and I hope this fuzziness doesn’t end soon.
